Key Responsibilities of a Purser
As a Purser, you will have a diverse set of responsibilities, which can be broadly categorized into two main areas: wheelhouse duties and data management.
Wheelhouse Job Responsibilities
- Emergency Response Team Member: You will participate as part of the onboard emergency response team as per the Station Bill.
- Health Program Administration: Administer the health program on the vessel, including medical assessments and treatments in coordination with HealthForce doctors. You’ll track medical inventory and complete necessary logs.
- Safety Management: Assist the Mate with Safety Management responsibilities, including documentation of briefings, orientations, inspections, and safety meetings.
- Paperwork Management: Keep updated all necessary fishing and regulatory paperwork, ensuring compliance with NMFS, ADFG, USCG, and OSHA regulations.
- Vessel Quota Management: Track vessel quotas per tow and reconcile changes as directed by the office.
- Coordination of Offloads: Handle logistics for offloads, including requests for petty cash and vendor contacts, ensuring all authorizations are completed beforehand.
- Crew Administration: Maintain official crew rosters and act as a liaison between crew members and HR for any onboard complaints or investigations.
Data Management and Factory Responsibilities
- Quality Assurance Oversight: The Purser has final decision-making authority regarding quality assurance, including communication with the office.
- Monitoring Logs: Conduct daily monitoring of various logs, including Sanitation Log, Metal Inclusion Log, and Thermometer Calibration Log.
- Temperature Checks: Ensure proper temperatures are taken and documented at each freezer break.
- Documentation Management: Coordinate with Corporate Quality Assurance on sampling frequencies and ensure HACCP documentation is completed timely.
- Enforcement of GMP Standards: Uphold all Good Manufacturing Practices and sanitation requirements in collaboration with factory crew.
Qualifications for a Purser Job

- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Science, or a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Purser or Observer aboard a fishing vessel.
