Role Overview
The Director of Procurement at Sysco Canada reports to the VP of Procurement and plays a vital role in enhancing our procurement strategies to ensure customer loyalty and market share growth. This full-time, permanent position focuses on managing a team of Procurement Managers and collaborating with various departments to drive performance and purchasing efficiencies across all product categories and customer segments.
Key Responsibilities
In your role as Director, you will undertake several critical responsibilities:
Developing Procurement Strategies: Craft and implement procurement strategies that align with Sysco’s overall business objectives. Set goals, establish key performance indicators (KPIs), and develop long-term plans to guide the procurement process.
Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the Procurement Managers and inventory planning team, fostering collaboration with Operations, National & Local Sales, and Merchandising to ensure that service and inventory goals are consistently met.
Risk Mitigation: Identify and manage supply chain risks, including disruptions and supplier reliability issues. Develop contingency plans to address potential challenges effectively.
Procurement Technology Implementation: Explore and implement procurement technologies and automation tools to enhance efficiency, data analysis, and decision-making processes.
Inventory Management: Work closely with the Field Merchandising team to manage aged and obsolete inventory, creating strategies to minimize spoilage and maximize revenue through effective inventory control.
Monitoring Purchase Price Variances: Keep a close eye on Purchase Price Variances (PPV) and strategically manage inventory to enhance profitability.
Root Cause Analysis: Conduct overall procurement root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to drive business results, while coaching and developing procurement leadership.
Collaboration: Support the VP of Procurement in communicating relevant inventory and service information to the Canadian Leadership Team and Field Sales & Merchandising teams.
Food Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with Sysco’s Food Safety Policy to meet all food safety, quality, and legality requirements.
Environmental Stewardship: Drive Environmental, Health, and Safety performance by ensuring resources are allocated effectively and teams are held accountable to EHS programs.
Inclusive Culture: Champion and embrace an inclusive workplace culture, promoting diversity and teamwork.
Qualifications and Skills
To excel in Director Jobs at Sysco Canada, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- Management Experience: A minimum of five years of management experience in retail or foodservice.
- Relevant Experience: At least seven years of experience in a merchandising or sales/marketing role within foodservice distribution is preferred.
- Educational Background: A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Formal certification in procurement is a plus.
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to build high-performing teams and effectively manage conflict.
- Strong Communication: Ability to build relationships and communicate effectively across the organization.

- Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with procurement software, demand planning, and inventory management systems. Intermediate expertise in Microsoft Office is necessary.
