What Does an Accreditation and Regulatory Readiness Specialist Do?
An Accreditation and Regulatory Readiness Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring that Brown University Health meets all necessary accreditation and regulatory standards. Reporting to the Director of Accreditation and Regulatory Readiness, you will support compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, Department of Health (DOH) requirements, and other related external regulatory accreditation and certification standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Compliance and Readiness:
- Support continuous self-assessment of Brown University Health’s compliance with TJC, CMS, DOH, and other standards.
- Assist in ongoing mock survey audits and tracers to ensure readiness for actual surveys.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work with Risk Management, Care Transformation, Quality and Safety, and other quality initiatives to review and address accreditation and regulatory opportunities.
- Coordinate with various departments to implement compliance initiatives.
- Project Management:
- Help manage regulatory and accreditation compliance projects by identifying key phases, implementation steps, stakeholders, timelines, resource needs, and potential obstacles.
- Use project management techniques to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
- Committee Coordination:
- Organize monthly accreditation readiness committee meetings.
- Assign Joint Commission readiness leads for each chapter and assist with survey preparation activities.
- Maintain and update accreditation-required policies and documents.
- Performance Monitoring:
- Monitor performance metrics related to regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Prepare reports and recommendations for leadership and readiness committee meetings.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Advise departments, services, and committees on specific accreditation and regulatory requirements.
- Provide training and instructions on TJC regulations and clinical improvement models.
- Tool Development and Documentation:
- Develop tools, learning aids, standard reports, and monitoring plans to promote compliance.
- Conduct tracing activities and document reviews as needed.
- Patient Safety Standards:
- Analyze and communicate sentinel event alerts and other TJC alerts.
- Stay updated on patient safety standards and ensure organizational compliance.
- Continuous Learning:
- Review literature to stay informed about federal, state, and voluntary regulatory standards related to quality improvement and accreditation requirements.
- Support hosting of regulatory or accreditation personnel visits and follow-up activities.
- Other Duties:
- Perform other related tasks as assigned to support the accreditation and regulatory readiness of Brown University Health.
Required Qualifications
To qualify for the Accreditation and Regulatory Readiness Specialist position, you should meet the following requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor’s degree in health administration, nursing, or a related healthcare professional field is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
- Behavioral Health Background: Preferred but not mandatory.
Experience:
- Prior Experience: At least two years of experience in accreditation, regulatory compliance, or a related field is preferred.
- Organizational Accreditation: Experience with managing and supporting organizational accreditation (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS) is preferred.
- Healthcare Quality Management: Knowledge of the principles and practices of healthcare quality management is preferred.
- Project Management: Experience in project management is preferred.
- Microsoft Office: Proficiency in all Microsoft Office software applications is required.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Ability to make presentations internally and externally.
- Multi-Project Focus: Ability to focus on multiple projects and re-establish priorities as necessary.
- Complex Environment: Ability to facilitate and work within a complex multi-site environment.

Physical Requirements
This role involves both physical and mental demands to ensure the effectiveness of compliance activities:
- Work Environment: Primarily office-based with some remote communication through virtual meetings. Occasional time in the office may be required for meetings and training.
- Physical Activity: Ability to sit, stand, and move around the office for extended periods. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
